Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 4, 2026 · Effective: July 4, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Breakup Buddy (“Breakup Buddy,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects your information when you use the Breakup Buddy mobile app (the “App”) and the website at breakupbuddy.app (together, the “Service”).

Breakup Buddy is a peer-support and self-help tool for people going through breakups, operated as a sole proprietorship based in California, USA. Because the App touches on sensitive, emotional subject matter, we’ve tried to keep our data practices minimal and to explain them plainly. By using the Service, you agree to this Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

  • Account information. You sign in with Sign in with Apple. Apple provides us with a unique identifier and, depending on your choice, your name and either your real email or a private “relay” email. We do not receive your Apple ID password.
  • Content you create. Chat messages you send to the AI companion, journal entries, mood check-ins, exercise responses, community posts, and healing-globe messages.
  • Communications. If you email us or opt in to our newsletter, we receive your message and email address.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage & diagnostics. How you interact with the Service, feature usage, session information, crash logs, device type, operating-system version, and approximate, non-precise location derived from your IP address.
  • Identifiers. Device and installation identifiers and, on the website, standard log data and analytics identifiers.

Information from purchases

When you subscribe to Breakup Buddy Pro, the purchase is processed by Apple In-App Purchase and managed through RevenueCat. We receive your subscription status and entitlements — we never receive or store your credit-card or payment-card details.

2. How we use your information

We use the information above to:

  • Provide the App’s features — the AI companion, exercises, journaling, mood tracking, and community.
  • Generate AI responses and maintain conversation context (see Section 3).
  • Operate subscriptions and provide customer support.
  • Moderate community content to keep the space safe and supportive.
  • Understand usage, diagnose problems, and improve the Service.
  • Protect the Service, enforce our Terms, and comply with legal obligations.

3. AI processing and anonymization

The AI companion is powered by third-party large-language-model providers — OpenAI (our primary provider) and Together AI (a fallback provider). To generate a response, the content of your message must be sent to one of these providers.

Before your content is sent to an AI provider, we run it through an automated anonymization step that removes personal identifiers (such as names, emails, and phone numbers). This is designed to reduce the personal information that reaches the AI providers. No automated process is perfect, so we also ask you not to share highly sensitive details (like your full name, address, financial information, or government ID numbers) in chat.

Our AI providers process this content to return a response and, under our current agreements with them, are not permitted to use it to train their general-purpose models. We name our AI providers here so you know where your conversations are processed.

4. Your content and the community

Private by default.Your chats, journal entries, and mood data are private to your account and are used to provide you with the App’s features. They are not shown to other users.

Community content is public.Anything you post to the peer community or the healing globe is visible to other users and is displayed anonymously (without your name). Please don’t include information in a public post that you wouldn’t want others to see. We moderate this content (using automated tools and human review) and may remove anything that violates our Terms.

5. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only in these limited ways:

  • With service providers that operate the Service on our behalf (listed below), under contracts that limit their use of the information to providing their service.
  • With other users, for content you choose to post publicly (see Section 4).
  • For legal reasons, if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or security of our users, the public, or the Service.
  • In a business transfer, if the Service or its assets are acquired by or merged with another company, in which case we will require the successor to honor this Policy or notify you of any material change.

6. Service providers (subprocessors)

We rely on the following providers to operate the Service:

  • Apple — App distribution, Sign in with Apple, and In-App Purchase billing.
  • OpenAI — primary AI language-model provider for the chat companion.
  • Together AI — fallback AI language-model provider.
  • Google Firebase / Google Cloud — authentication, database, storage, and analytics (United States).
  • RevenueCat — subscription and entitlement management.
  • Cloudflare and DigitalOcean — website hosting, content delivery, and security.
  • Kit (formerly ConvertKit) — email newsletters, if you opt in.

Each provider has its own privacy practices, which govern their handling of information.

7. Data retention and deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. You can delete your account at any time from within the App’s settings. When you delete your account, we delete your profile and private content (chats, journal, and mood data) from our active systems, subject to reasonable backup and legal-retention periods.

Content you posted publicly to the community may remain visible in anonymized form after deletion, to the extent it has already been shared with other users, cached, or backed up.

8. Your privacy rights

California (CCPA / CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to request access to or deletion of your personal information, to request correction of inaccurate information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law. To exercise these rights, contact us at [email protected] or delete your account in-app.

The categories of personal information we may collect are: identifiers (such as your Apple-provided account identifier and email); commercial information (your subscription status); internet and network activity (usage and diagnostics); coarse geolocation (derived from your IP address); your user content (chats, journal entries, mood check-ins, and community posts); and sensitive personal information— content you provide that may reveal your mental or emotional health. We collect this from you and your device, use and disclose it only for the purposes described in this Policy, and retain it as described in Section 7. Because we collect sensitive personal information, you have the right to limit its use; we already use it only to provide the Service and do not use it to infer characteristics about you.

Europe, the UK, and other regions (GDPR)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or a similar jurisdiction, you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal data, and to data portability. We process your general personal data on the legal bases of performing our contract with you (providing the Service) and our legitimate interests in operating and improving the Service. Some information you choose to provide — such as mood check-ins, journal entries, and reflections you share with the AI companion — can reveal your mental or emotional health, which is a “special category” of data under the GDPR; we process that sensitive information only on the basis of your explicit consent, which you provide by choosing to enter it. You may withdraw consent at any time (including by deleting the content or your account) and have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law.

9. Security

We use commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures — including encryption in transit and access controls — to protect your information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.

10. Data location and international transfers

The Service is operated from the United States, and our providers primarily store and process data in the United States. If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our providers operate, which may have different data-protection laws than your own. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) for these transfers.

11. Children

Breakup Buddy is intended only for adults 18 years of age and older. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from someone under 18, we will delete it. If you believe a minor has provided us with information, please contact us.

12. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date and, where appropriate, provide additional notice through the App or website. Your continued use of the Service after an update takes effect means you accept the revised Policy.

13. Contact

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or your information, contact us at [email protected].
